Crazy Boots and Juan in a Million

....or, W and CP: The Austin Edition (day 1).

So far, I really like it here! I was worried...this the state that supplied us with George W., the bolo tie, and many other things I am very weary of. But then again, I do LOVE using the hook 'em horns hand sign at all times...so I knew this town had potential.

I got here around 11:00 CST today (that is 12:00 EST for those of you who know how much I love talking about time differences) and after getting an amazing deal on a rental car ($14 a day!) I decided to take the advice of most everyone who made restaurant recommendations in Austin and stop by Juan in a Million. Juan in a Million is on a street lined with party stores and places where you can rent moon bounces (thanks to Beth S. for preparing me for this wonderland of party supply goodness). I can't really imagine a better combination: breakfast tacos and a plethora of piƱatas and other party supplies. It was heaven. The restaurant felt like the epitome of an authentic food experience--it was in a "unusual" location, people stared while I photographed the items I ordered, it was cheap, the chairs were mismatched, and lots of locals were sitting at tables on the sunny patio eating lunch with me.

Juan's (can I call it that?) is known for the Don Juan, which can be described as "a secret combination of potato, egg, bacon and cheese in a deliciously hot tortilla." The price of this delicious breakfast situation? A mere $3.60! How could I go wrong? It was unbelievable and extremely filling. I also ordered a plate of the best guacamole I think I have ever had (except possibly for maybe the last time I was in Texas during elementary school with my dad--Peter loves a good guac). My Juan's experience truly lived up to the hype. I would suggest skipping the "Don Juan" t-shirt for purchase behind the cash register (the only sort of touristy thing about the whole restaurant) and opt for the guac. If you're part of my Austin based readership (hi Jodi!) or in town for the upcoming Texas Freedom Network lobby day (Mer S. H.), Juan in a Million is located at 2300 Cesar Chavez Street.

After I had my fill of breakfast taco goodness, I entered Allen's Boots into my trusty GPS and drove myself over to the funky South Congress (SoCo--but I hear the cool kids never call it this) area of Austin. I had been educated in the ways of boot buying by my sister (thanks Reb!) and knew what I was in store for. I ended up trying on almost 25 pairs of boots in all colors, styles, and widths. The process was actually exhausting and sort of physically challenging (good thing, since I needed to burn off the Don Juan) but I ended up with a pair I am very happy with (pictured here). I stuck around Allen's after my boot try on workout to photograph the store. It was such a fun afternoon.

Keep your eyes peeled for my new boots around the streets of DC. For a sneak peak, here's a few of the best shots from today:

About Me

My Photo
When I am not busy helping non-profit organizations raise money online to change to the world, I leverage my status as a DC native (and expert Googler) to recommend products, restaurants, recipes, and shops (in addition to other things I find mildly diverting) in my blog, Wild and Crazy Pearl. The photos and witty banter are all mine, and don't belong to my lovely employer. I spend too much money on Itunes and lots of time in Planned Parenthood board meetings. My favorite possession is the cobalt blue Kitchen Aid mixer I used part of my Bat Mitzvah money to buy (it is still going strong). I also enjoy wearing hooded sweatshirts, drinking grapefruit juice, and falling asleep with the TV on.
